Twin-town service not yet It's too early to commit to a municipal bus service between Whistler and Pemberton, says transit committee member and Whistler Councillor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden. David Houghton offered to provide an hourly transit link between the neighbouring communities during a presentation at a recent Whistler council meeting. The transit committee examined the proposal at its May 26 meeting, deciding to endorse the concept, but not to side with any specific project at this time. No one is saying it'll never happen, or that it won't happen within the next few years, Wilhelm-Morden says. "It's not a simple thing to do: there are onerous requirements, licensing and bonding of drivers and vehicles," says Wilhelm-Morden, of B.C. Transit's and local governments' involvement in any people shuffling plans. One pothole in Houghton's plans is that Maverick Coach Lines Ltd. already provides a service every few hours between the two communities. It could — and likely would — veto any challengers to its business monopoly, sending any new applications into a bog of approval processes, hearings and red tape. Houghton said he has received endorsements for his proposal from Pemberton council, Whistler/Blackcomb and the Chateau Whistler.
