The Whistler Chapel Society is holding a garden party this Sunday, June 14, and everyone is invited. The "party," between 2 and 5 p.m., will be to landscape and clean up the site for the future Whistler Interfaith Chapel and Meeting Place. The society’s office is currently located in a trailer on the site. High Country Landscaping will be on hand to orchestrate the garden party, but everyone is invited to pitch in and help out. Bring your own tools, if you have them. Donations of flowers and small shrubs are also welcome. Most of the landscaping will be done in planters and pots but anyone considering donating specific material should call Jami Fidork at 905-4211. Nesters Market is supplying sustenance to those who pitch in. Books by the boxful Myrtle Philip students have their work cut out for them to catch up on all the new reading available to them, thanks to three boxes of new books purchased from $2,544 raised during a February read-a-thon. Whistler's public library also got $2,500 to buy children's books. "Thank-you to the community for this donation, it's wonderful," says Ellen Bartlett, school librarian. The books cover all kinds of topics, from primary school picture books to intermediate novels. Bounding hound gets frisky first Bonnie the border collie keeps adding top finishes to her meteoric rise in the world of dog jumping and agility. Her latest accomplishments were a first in jumpers open and a second in advanced agility at the recent Hub City Hot Dogs (Nanaimo Kennel Club) hosted trial. The 20-months-old black and white dog is owned by Terry Vincent. The two have been on a tear of late in the dog sports competition world. At an end of May agility event in Armstrong, B.C., Bonnie earned a second and third place finish in the starters agility open obstacle course that is run with the dog handler working in sync with the dog to get the animal through the course in double-quick time. Bonnie's efforts earned her a spot in the advanced agility open the next day, getting a second place award in advanced agility and a first place in jumpers open. There's no word if Bonnie wears a blue cape with an "S" on it while she competes.
