The Whistler Public Library is inviting the community to celebrate its 12th birthday this weekend, with a used book sale and cake. On Saturday, Sept. 5, the library will have a variety of hard and soft cover books on sale, starting at 10 a.m. The cutting of the birthday cake, a donation from the bakers at the Delta Whistler, will be at 1 p.m. The library is constantly updating its book collection. For sale are duplicate and damaged books and those that have not been borrowed in the past three years. "We have plenty of good books to sell," says Joan Richoz, chief librarian. The Whistler Public Library Association was formed in 1985 by a group of dedicated individuals, and opened in the basement of the municipal hall in August, 1986. The library has since grown, moving from the 1,400 square feet in municipal hall to the present 2,800 square feet on Main Street in December, 1994. In 1997, an increased grant from the municipality allowed the library to almost double its operating hours to 51 per week, to accommodate the needs of its constantly increasing users. The collection has developed alongside the increase in users to include books, CDs, books on tape, videos, talking books, magazines, newspapers and foreign language material. The library also offers public access to on-line computers for the collection, computers for word processing and for access to the internet and reference works on CD-ROM.
