Whistler and Pemberton Search and Rescue teams Tuesday recovered the body of a 23-year-old Vancouver man, who died Monday while climbing the Matier Glacier on Slalok Mountain near Pemberton. Ryan Gregory Robertson was on the glacier descending when he fell on the ice and slid approximately 500 feet into a bergshrund. The fall occurred Monday, Nov. 9 at noon. Robertson was climbing with one other male, who witnessed the fall and immediately went for assistance after his initial attempt to locate him failed. Emergency personnel did not locate Robertson until 5:30 p.m. Monday. His body was found in the crevasse buried under six feet of snow that fell on top of him after the fall. The Search and Rescue team was required to stay overnight, as weather and the lack of daylight grounded the team’s helicopter. Robertson was flown off the glacier by helicopter Tuesday morning, and was transported to Vancouver for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.. Pemberton RCMP and the coroner’s service are investigating the incident.
