Bizarre Bazaar Your chance to grab original artworks right in time for Christmas is approaching, with the community arts council’s annual Bizarre Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 21. The event acts as a fund-raiser for the popular Children’s Art Festival, which is held in May each year. Bazaar co-ordiantor Lynda Chandler says the response from local artisans has been outstanding this year and their booths are completely full. The variety of goods on sale will include willow woodcrafts, fleece wear, beeswax creations, birdhouses, candles, stained glass, pottery, cards, jewelry, hand-woven scarves, cabinets, tapestry bags and boxer shorts. All arts and crafts are handmade and Chandler reports that almost all of the artists are from the Pemberton-Whistler-Squamish area. Some local non-profit groups like the girl guides, the children’s choir, Whistler Museum and Archives and AWARE will also have a presence at the bazaar. Chandler advises that the event is completely booked this year and any artists who were unable to participate should send information about themselves and their work to the Whistler Community Arts Council at PO Box 383, Whistler, BC, VON 1BO. Christmas showcase in Pemberton Even more creative gifts will be available this year at the second annual Pemberton Home Business Showcase on Sunday, Nov. 22. The local shopping showcase will take place from noon until 4 p.m. at the Santa Fe Station restaurant. Approximately 15 businesses will be featuring products and services which could make great gift ideas. At this stage participants include the children’s and mother’s wear of Please Mum, Discovery Toys, Princess House Crystals, Avon, Usborne’s educational children’s books, Carty Creation’s hand-painted wooden decorations, Lindsey Embroidery and Dressmaking, Usana Nutritional Supplements and other cottage craft businesses. There will also be a raffle draw for a Christmas basket filled with items from the participating businesses. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Pemberton Food Bank. There are still a limited number of tables left for any home based businesses in the Pemberton area that are interested in participating. To reserve a spot call Bettina Falloon at 894-6130. Whistler to start cancer society The Coast Garibaldi Health Services Society is starting a chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society in Whistler. A group of interested volunteers is needed to provide prevention education programs in the community, focus on healthy lifestyle choices and provide support to people diagnosed with cancer and their families. The society will also need help with fund-raising. A meeting is being planned for Thursday, Nov. 26 at 9 p.m. in the Whistler Health Care Centre multi-purpose room. Edie Hebb and Marilyn McIvor extend an invitation to anyone who feels they could get involved to call them. Hebb can be contacted at 932-5460 and McIvor is at the Coast Garibaldi Community Health Centre, 932-3202. Volunteers needed to push condoms The Condomsense Campaign ’98 will soon be taking its message of safe sex and HIV prevention to the streets of Whistler. From Nov. 16 to Dec. 2 Volunteers are needed to distribute condoms and a safer sex message to Whistler residents at staff housing and participating local bars. Volunteers must be comfortable with speaking to others about proper condom usage, sexually transmitted diseases and HIV. Training will take place at the Whistler Health Care Centre on Tuesday, Nov. 24 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. If you are interested in participating leave a message for Sue Clarkson of SAFE at 932-3202.
