Whistler, the only Resort Municipality in the province since it was created under special legislation in 1975, may no longer be the only town with that designation. On Monday Employment and Investment Minister Glen Clark introduced the Mountain Resort Associations Act, which will allow other ski resorts access to the same local government and resort association benefits that Whistler has had under the Resort Municipality of Whistler Act. The legislation will allow resorts such as Sun Peaks to create a resort association, similar to the WRA. It also gives municipal governments the right to enact legislation in the best interest of the resort, such as designating specific lands for resort use. Municipal Affairs Minister Darlene Marzari, who will administer the act, said it "provides resort areas with the development tools they need to build healthy, liveable communities and to promote their recreational industries. This is essential as resort communities and businesses mutually depend upon one another for their success." The second annual Father and Daughter Dance takes place at the Chateau Whistler Resort April 13 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Featuring Whistler's hottest DJ, food donated by the Chateau, door prizes and awesome mocktails, the Father and Daughter Dance is the social event of the elementary school season — but dads don't get in without a daughter. Tickets are $15 for dads (or dads for the day) and $8 for daughters. Dress is as formal as you like. Call Alan Lande, at 932-1966, or Heather Rondeau, at 932-6276, for tickets or further information. Proceeds go to the Myrtle Philip Community School. The Whistler Community Services Society has its eye on your coin jar. In fact, they want it. On Saturday, April 15 volunteer canvassers will be going door to door between 5 and 7 p.m. collecting pennies and spare change for the society's Pennies From Heaven Easter Coin Harvest. Coins can also be dropped off at Nesters, Alpine Market, IGA, The Grocery Store, The Husky or the Upper Village Market. The change will be used to help the Whistler Community Services Society continue programs such as the food bank, Coats for Kids, Santa's Helpers, parenting classes, Community Kitchen and others. Between 5 and 7:30 p.m. on April 15 join the volunteers in the village and try to guess the number of coins. Winner will be drawn at 7:30. Anyone wishing to help out can call 932-0113.
