Blackcomb concludes record season Blackcomb's skier visits topped 970,000 when the season finally concluded Monday, far surpassing last year's record total of 789,884. "No wonder we're so tired," Blackcomb Public Relations Co-ordinator Sue Bayley-Cudmore joked Tuesday. Blackcomb attracted between 3,500 and 4,500 skiers and boarders per day during the Victoria Day weekend. Perfect weather and the Mountain Meltdown activities combined to draw the skier traffic. Projections early last month were that Blackcomb and Whistler combined were going to have about 1.6 million skier visits, surpassing Vail, which has had about 1.5 million skier visits in recent years. Last year the two local mountains entertained 1.45 million skier visits. Bayley-Cudmore said excellent ski conditions all winter, new lifts and the low Canadian dollar were some of the factors behind the record skier visits. As well, ski areas in eastern North America had relatively poor snow years. German and British skier visits were up substantially this winter over last, and Bayley-Cudmore said Taiwan is an emerging skier market, as is Mexico and Latin America. Blackcomb's skier visit total was only about 30,000 shy of the company's stated goal of one million skier visits. It was only seven years ago that the two mountains combined to top one million skier visits for the first time.
