The Sea to Sky Corridor is buzzing with talk of how to solve the sewage dilemma at the new Pemberton Secondary School. The $13 million facility, scheduled to open in the fall, may remain closed because the Village of Pemberton's sewage treatment plant is not adequate to handle the increased flows when the school opens. Pemberton Mayor John Steward says the school cannot open because the village has yet to receive word on a $1.59 million federal/provincial infrastructure grant to upgrade the plant. Meanwhile the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, the Howe Sound School Board and Pemberton officials are scrambling to find an interim solution. The village has already passed a bylaw allowing holding tanks at the new PSS and talk of shipping the sewage to Whistler for treatment has been flogged in the local media. Whistler Mayor Ted Nebbeling says no one has asked Whistler what they think about the idea. "I find it quite offensive that not one person has spoken to me about the plan," Nebbeling says. "If Whistler is going to be a part of this we have to find out where the funding is coming from." Wendy Agrey has started a creative writing workshop for Whistler writers. Agrey, who has been writing children’s stories for several years, has teamed up with Bruce Harrott to create the workshops. Writers meet every Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. It’s been such a rewarding experience, says Agrey. "Not only for me as a writer, but also to discover just how much writing talent exists in Whistler." At present a handfull of writers participate in the weekly workshops, which started June 6, but Agrey and Harrott encourage anyone interested in writing to participate.
