Local student in basketball showdown The big one-on-one showdown between basketball stars Shaquille O'Neal and Hakeem Olijawan will have a Whistler touch when it airs on Showcase next month. Myrtle Philip Grade 7 student Jeff Pyatt will be seen in the video passing a ball to Olijawan. The Houston Rockets star was in Whistler two weeks ago training with the Canucks strength and fitness coach, Peter Twist. Pyatt, who recently moved to Whistler from Toronto, was on hand when Showcase showed up to shoot some footage of Olijawan training. Pyatt ended up with an autographed basketball. Downhillers benefit from golf tourney Robin MacFarlane and Patty Wittle were the low gross champions of the 15th annual Bob Parsons Memorial Golf Tournament last weekend, but Ian Chernencoff and Dana Williams were the big winners. Chernencoff, of the Vernon Ski Club, and Williams, of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, each received $1,000 bursaries. The two downhillers are with the B.C. Ski Team program and have shown great improvement. Both recently returned from Chile, where they were training with the national ski team. The Bob Parsons Memorial Golf Tournament is named in honour of one of the ski racing pioneers in the Whistler Valley. Bob Parsons was responsible for organizing countless downhill and technical events on Whistler Mountain and throughout Western Canada.
