Whistler RCMP are treating a letter from a Nigerian prince seeking overseas business opportunities as a scam.

Whistler RCMP are treating a letter from a Nigerian prince seeking overseas business opportunities as a scam. "We don’t have 100 per cent proof (that it is a scam), but we are treating it as such," a spokesperson says of the fax from Prince Charles Ugo. "The file is open and it is under investigation." Several Whistler businesses have received the fax this month. The faxed letter indicates the prince’s father died recently and left him to disperse $11 million in U.S. funds. The Province newspaper has listed this letter as one of the Top Ten business scams of 1995. A proposal to resolve the Willy Whistler dispute between the Whistler Resort Association and entrepreneur James Millership was to be evaluated by the WRA this week. The WRA asked for comments on the proposal from resort association members by Tuesday of this past week. The proposal would see Millership enter into a licence agreement with the WRA giving him exclusive use of the trademark and design in exchange for free performances. Millership would get the exclusive right to merchandise logoed items such as T-shirts, hats and glassware in order to make money. The logoed merchandise would be available to all retail merchants for re-sale. Squamish and Whistler area residents had raised $5,292 towards their goal of $9,500 for the B.C. Lung Association’s Christmas Seal Campaign, as of Dec. 1. That’s marginally behind last year’s total donations at this time. Funds raised by the campaign held one in five British Columbians with respiratory problems. "Using your Christmas Seals on your holiday mail is a sign of support and concern about lung health and clean air issues," says Muff Hackett, Lung Association director for the Squamish and Whistler area. The campaign continues to Jan. 31, 1996. Santa will be making a number of appearances around town in the next 10 days, including a session on Citta’s patio in Village Square Dec. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. The big guy will be available for photos in return for a donation to the food bank. Only non-perishable food items, please.
