The annual read-a-thon at the Myrtle Philip Community School Library and the Whistler Public Library gets underway Jan. 26. The read-a-thon is a co-ordinated project by the two libraries to raise funds to purchase more children’s books and to sponsor author readings during 1996. Students have been collecting pledges this week and will now record how long they read and what they read during a specific week before collecting the pledge money. During the 1994 read-a-thon 134 students read more than 50,000 pages to raise nearly $3,500. Participation in the read-a-thon is voluntary but librarians Joan Richoz and Ellen Bartlett hope to get children and their parents reading on a regular basis, thus encouraging children to become life-long readers. Carol and Jeff Stipec have added a new baby girl to their family and Jeff is subtracting a year’s worth of coffee from his revenues at Java at Nesters. Tara Joan Stipec was born at 4:43 p.m. Jan. 13 in Lions Gate Hospital. The first child for Carol and Jeff, she weighed in at 6 lbs, 7 oz. The prize in the pool Jeff was running on the baby’s arrival is a year’s worth of coffee from his Java at Nesters coffeehouse. Treaty negotiations with the In-SHUCK-ch/N’Quatqua tribes resume at 10 a.m. Feb. 2 in the Anderson Lake Community Hall in D’Arcy. The chief negotiators invite members of the public and media to observe the discussions. An advisory planning committee for the Pemberton area is being established to provide input to both the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District and the Village of Pemberton. The objectives of the committee are to provide input for public involvement, increase interaction between the public and locally-elected officials in relation to the planning process, and create an open process to encourage public participation. The advisory committee will be elected by the public, rather than appointed by any governing body. The need for such a committee was identified over the past two years.
