The Ministry of Highways finally agreed last week to allow a signal light at the Blueberry Drive-Highway 99 intersection, but the municipality is in no hurry to install it. Councillors agreed Monday that since the ski season is "nearly over," there are engineering issues to be dealt with and the recently-established transportation advisory group has not yet had a chance to review the matter there is no urgency to install the signal. While wiring for the signal has been installed and the hardware is available, the municipality and the Ministry of Highways are looking at extending the second southbound lane from Village Gate Boulevard all the way to Blueberry Drive. A contract for the design and construction of a pedestrian overpass at the entrance to Nordic Estates was approved by council Monday. The overpass will be 35-40 metres in length and about eight feet wide. No design has been proposed yet but it could be a covered overpass. If it is not covered snow may be cleared by plowing it or through heat tracing. The Delta Whistler Resort is hosting a community lunch Feb. 28 to help support the Whistler Food Bank. The food bank has been operated by the Whistler Community Services Society since 1986. The food bank primarily helps single parent families and singles who have trouble putting food on the table. The food bank comes under the WCSS’s Care Fund, which was established to assist those in a temporary financial crisis. As spring gets closer and layoffs start the food bank becomes more heavily taxed. Anyone in Whistler who would like to help out is invited to join the buffet lunch between noon and 2 p.m. in the Cheakamus Room of the Delta. Lunch will include salads, roast chicken with Hunter Sauce, carved top round of beef, fresh vegetables and rice and assorted pastries for dessert. The cost is $9.95 per person, plus taxes, and all profits will go to the food bank.
