RCMP are still looking for suspects in the beating of a local skier on Blackcomb last Friday, March 8.

RCMP are still looking for suspects in the beating of a local skier on Blackcomb last Friday, March 8. Staff Sergeant Jim Eglinski said Tuesday the incident "almost appears to have started as a consensual fight" between a skier and a snowboarder but got one-sided when two other snowboarders got involved. Eglinski said the incident appears to have begun when a skier skied through the snowboard park on Blackcomb Friday. Several snowboarders yelled at the skier, who then fell. Eglinski says the skier’s poles may have slashed someone when he fell. The skier then got up and skied to the bottom of the Catskinner Chair. A snowboarder followed him to the bottom of the lift, where they began to argue. Eglinski says the boarder may have thrown the skiers poles away. The two then started fighting and ended up wrestling on the snow. At that point two other boarders showed up and started kicking the skier. Blackcomb staff saw the fight and yelled at the boarders, who then took off. Eglinski says the skier received multiple fractures to his face, but the injuries were not life-threatening. He has since been released from medical care. David Barry, Blackcomb’s director of public relations(?) said Tuesday it appears to be a case of assault, rather a skier-snowboarder conflict, and they have left the matter in the RCMP’s hands. As of Tuesday no charges had been laid. The RCMP are asking anyone who knows the identities of the boarders to come forward.
