Ski champion has prime ministerial ideas Former Whistlerite Nancy Greene Raine may not be running for Prime Minister, but her ideas on what she would do if she was at 24 Sussex Drive have won her first prize in the Magna for Canada Scholarship Awards. Raine was one of 10 prominent Canadians invited to write an essay offering solutions for a more prosperous and united Canada. University students were also invited to write essays on the same topic. Ten regional winners were declared and those 10 student’s essays were collected with the prominent Canadians’ essays in a book titled "As Prime Minister, I would...", which was published last fall by Key Porter Books. Since publication, overall winners have been declared in both the student and invitational categories. Trevor Moat, who is completing his masters degree in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University in Ottawa won, an additional $5,000, on top of the $5,000 each of the 10 university students received. As well, Carleton University received an award of $10,000. Raine won $20,000 for her essay. Among the other prominent Canadians in the book are William Gairdner, author of The Trouble With Canada, Buzz Hargrove, national president of the Canadian Auto Workers union, John Crispo of the University of Toronto and the C.D. Howe Institute, and economist Pierre Fortin. In addition to the book, a one-hour television special aired on TV stations across the country last week. It was shown locally on UTV Feb. 25. Last year Magna International Inc., Canada’s largest supplier of automotive systems and components, allocated $1 million for the Magna for Canada Scholarship Fund. The awards program is co-sponsored by the Fair Enterprise Institute, a non-political, non-profit organization founded to improve Canadian living standards. Magna Chairman Frank Stronach, an outspoken advocate of reforming Canada’s political and tax systems, wrote the introduction to the book and outlines some of the ideas he would implement if he were Prime Minister.
