The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment is celebrating Earth Day Saturday, April 20 at Myrtle Philip Community School. The Earth Day Fair and Reduction Dance includes beginner bird walks at 8 a.m. and noon, a WCWC play at noon, the Mount Currie Native Dancers and Drummers at 2 p.m. and Mount Currie herbalist Morgan Wells at 4 p.m. Recycling and composting displays, birdhouse workshops, food, music, clowns and more continue all day at the school and they are all free. From 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. the Reduction Dance will feature She Stole My Beer, Big Yellow Taxi and Workshop. Tickets are $15 in advance from Escape Route and Santini, or $18 at the door. The Peace and Dignity Journey, a run to recognize indigenous people in the western hemisphere, begins early next month simultaneously in Alaska and Argentina. The run concludes at the Temples of the Sun and Moon in Teothuacan, Mexico on Oct. 12. James Louie of Mount Currie is the local spokesman for the run, which should pass this area around Fathers’ Day. Louie is inviting native and non-native people committed to the preservation of the native American cultures to participate in the run. Call Louie at 894-5479 for information. The Jennifer Jones Bear Foundation is presenting a slide show at the Delta Whistler Resort April 27, titled Bears In Our Backyard. The show is intended for adults and children and will be presented at 9:30 a.m. Admission is by donation. Jane Denham and Les Clare have a new baby girl, Marnie Elizabeth, born Easter Sunday, April 7 at Lions Gate Hospital. An information meeting about Kidsport in Whistler is planned for Myrtle Philip Community School April 25 at 7 p.m. Kidsport is intended to assist children and youth in Whistler who would otherwise have financial difficulty participating in local recreational league sports or clubs.
