Bake/book sale is Oct. 25 By Teresa Bate, Grade 8 student and fundraising co-ordinator The Grade 8s of Whistler Secondary School are having a book/bake sale and need your help to raise some money for our educational trips to the Vancouver Aquarium and various others. The sale is in front of the IGA Plus, Saturday, Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come sample our tasty treats while picking up a few books to read on those cold winter nights. Thank-you for supporting our fundraising effort. Chevron survey positive The folks promoting the Chevron gas station proposal are gearing up for the public hearing, Monday, Oct. 27, by releasing results from another open house poll. Of 195 comment cards filled out by people who dropped by the open house in Whistler Town Plaza, Oct. 3-13, 87 per cent of comment forms indicated support for the gas station proposed for the corner of Nancy Greene Drive and Highway 99, next to the Shoestring Lodge, according to Randy Johnson, Chevron's retail manager. Eleven people said they were not in favour and 7 per cent were undecided, the card tally shows. A total 263 people visited the open house. A previous open house, held July 29 to Aug. 4, had a similar result, Johnson says. A second gas station proposal making the rounds is for a Petro Canada gas bar to be built in front of the Alpine Meadows Market convenience store in Alpine Meadows. A telephone survey commissioned by the Petro Can forces recently sought opinions of residents living in the Whistler Cay to Emerald Estates area of town. Results of that survey are not yet known. The Chevron public hearing is in the McGuire Room at the Whistler Conference Centre, starting at 7 p.m. Flu no more at clinic Buy some skis and get a flu shot. A drop-in flu vaccination clinic is being held during the Whistler Mountain Ski Club Ski Swap at the conference centre Oct. 31-Nov. 2. Sponsored by the Travel Medicine & Vaccination Centre, this is the third annual clinic. Based on last year's response, it should be a popular place. A wicked strain of flu has already been making the rounds of Whistler's service industry this past month. Last year saw flu strike in epidemic proportions. The clinic is open Friday, 4-10 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the next two days. Shots are $15 a person. The clinic is for those who don't qualify for free flu shots. A shot must be taken well in advance of flu onset to work. For more information, call registered nurse Marilyn McIvor: 932-4196.
