Battle of the Badges cancelled

The Whistler RCMP pulled the plug on their annual Battle of the Badges charity hockey game after they became aware that the company they hired to promote it was a for-profit company that used telephone solicitation to raise money.

"We discourage telephone solicitation, and could not endorse it by using telemarketing ourselves," says Carmen Magnusson, Community Policing Officer for the Whistler detachment.

The Battle of the Badges, which was scheduled for Feb. 11, pits local RCMP against the Vancouver City Police, while former NHL stars officiate. The money collected from admission goes to the RCMP’s Drug Awareness Resistance and Education (DARE) program. Last year the charity game raised $1500 for DARE.

The Battle of the Badges will refund money to all of the sponsors for this year’s event.
