Whistler native and B.C. Ski Team veteran Scott Hume brought home two medals, a gold and a silver, from the Nabob Coffee Cup technical races in Panorama last weekend.

Members and alumni of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club also brought home some top results from the national race series, which was open to athletes at the FIS level.

More than 130 men and 90 women from the national team, the Ontario, Alberta and B.C. provincial teams, and from six other countries competed in the giant slalom and slalom events.

The racing kicked of on Dec. 13 with a giant slalom. Paul Stutz, a member of the national development team, took the gold medal, followed by teammates Brad Spence and Cameron Barnes.

Brian Bennett, a 21-year-old member of the WMSC, was fifth overall.

Scott Hume was seventh and Benjamin Thornhill, a WMSC alumnus who has graduated to the development team, was 10th.

In the second giant slalom, on Dec. 14, the top three were the same. Thornhill was fourth, Scott Hume was sixth and Bennett was 13 th .

In the first slalom on the following day, Hume won the gold medal, ahead of Stutz and Bennett.

Finally, in the second slalom on Dec. 16, Hume took the silver medal, behind B.C. teammate Brad Spence and ahead of Scott Anderson. Bennett, strong again, finished seventh.

"Brian Bennett’s performance was definitely a nice surprise," says WMSC coach Brett Macfarlane. "To see him finish in the middle of national team athletes so early is encouraging.

"He is looking forward to putting on a show when the national championships come to Whistler in March."

With the exception of Bennett, the only other local male to break the top 30 was WMSC member Moto Niwa.

The WMSC women were led by Anastasia Skrybina, who was 28 th in the first GS, and a career best ninth in the slalom on Dec. 16.

Whistler’s Jennifer Bertram had a good weekend racing with the B.C. Team, finishing 11 th and 13 th in the giant slalom.
