Grade 5 ski pass proving popular
Ten-year-olds across the country are taking advantage of free ski passes this season, with about 3,000 kids applying for the Grade 5 SnowPass each week.
The Canadian Ski Council has been flooded with applications and is expecting to process about 25,000 by the end of the season.
In the first year of the Grade 5 SnowPass, the CSC processed only 9,000 applications. Over the past five years however, with improved communications in schools, on the Internet and through word-of-mouth, the program has grown in leaps and bounds.
The SnowPass gives those kids who are in Grade 5 or born in 1991, the chance to ski for free up to three times at each of the 147 participating ski areas in Canada, including Whistler-Blackcomb.
Applications are still available from schools, Sport Chek stores across the county or online at www.snowpass.org. There is a $10 fee to process the application.
The SnowPass is valid throughout the reason. Some restrictions apply at certain ski areas.
New directors for SLRD
The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has announced new positions in its Board of Directors for the upcoming year.
Paul Lalli, from the District of Squamish, was elected to chair the SLRD board and Susan Gimse, from Electoral Area C, was elected to the position of vice-chair.
In a press release statement Lalli said, "I am really excited about the opportunity to lead the Regional District in 2002. We will have some great opportunities ahead, such as the Olympic Bid. I would like to thank everyone who supported me and I look forward to the challenges that the coming year will bring."
The Board also elected members to deal with regional hospital district matters. Lalli will chair the Squamish-Lillooet Regional Hospital District and Elinor Warner will chair the Sea to Sky Regional Hospital District. Whistler Mayor Hugh O'Reilly will serve as vice-chair for both districts.
