One of Whistler’s longest and most enduring traditions, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Cup Cross Country Ski Loppet, turns 25 this year. Skinny skiers of all ages and abilities, both serious and casual, take part in this annual event, travelling from across North America and around the world to be here this weekend.
It’s a free technique race, which means both skate and classic skis are welcome.
The course winds through the Lost Lake trail system and features Wild Willies Ski Club Jackrabbits and a sit-down lunch and awards ceremony at the Chateau’s ballroom.
The deadline for entry is noon on Friday, Jan. 25. You can enter at Wild Willies at Nesters, the Lost Lake ticket booth, or by calling Cheryl Morningstar at 604-932-3438.
The Jackrabbit category is open to kids 13 year old and younger, and features a 7.5 kilometre course. The junior category is for kids 14 to 17 and features a 1.5 km course.
For the adults, there is a recreational category for less competitive skiers that covers 15 km of trail, and a competitive age category covering 30 km.
The cost is $45 for adults, $30 for juniors, and $15 for Jackrabbits. An extra lunch is $30, or $15 for Jackrabbits.
In addition, there are Cross Country B.C. fees of $5 for competitors 14 and up, and $1 for Jackrabbits.
The race gets underway at 9 a.m. on Jan. 27 at the Fairmont Chateau Golf Course Clubhouse.
