Charity the winner at Winter Classic

There were no winners or losers in the 10th annual Telus Mobility Winter Classic, just optimists, pessimists and the occasional realist.

There were no winners or losers in the 10th annual Telus Mobility Winter Classic, just optimists, pessimists and the occasional realist.

The annual charity race, which raises money for the Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation, has people guess their time on the Pontiac Race Course under the Emerald Chair. The difference between the individual and combined team guess and the actual times determines who wins.

Thirty-nine teams of four took part in the race, and 139 times were logged.

This year the top team was Sun Won from Vancouver. Between the four racers, John Geddes, Adam Geddes, Wynn Bunbury and Ted Allard, they were only off their combined guess time by 4.35 seconds.

Intrawest 2, with Cathy Dixon, Bob Romanko, Gill Johnston and Christy Allan, was in second place with a time difference of 6.47 seconds.

Sea to Sky Real Estate, comprised of Francis Chiasson, Karen Vagelatos, David Thornhill and John McKenzie, was third with a difference of 6.47 seconds.

The closest individual guess belonged to Kirby Brown on Whistler-Blackcomb Team One. He came within 0.08 seconds of his guess time of 21.50.

Adam Geddes on Sun Won missed his guess by 0.1 seconds, and Betsy Linnell from Wasserman and Partners was third, 0.31 seconds faster than her guess of 23 seconds.

Linnell also had the top time for the women while Whistler-Blackcomb’s Mike Varrin once again had the fastest time for the men racing with the Sysco Konings team, which finished fourth.

The weekend, which included an opportunity to ski with a pro, a wine and cheese event, the race, and a gala dinner, dance and auction at the Roundhouse, raised over $145,000 for the Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation. Since 1993, the Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation has raised over $2 million to support charities in the Sea to Sky community in the area of health, human services, education, recreation, the arts, culture, and the environment.
