Local band hopefuls showcased at GMC Snow Show

As part of the Pontiac GMC Canadian Ski Championships awards ceremonies March 15-17, organizers have added a mainstage featuring live concerts daily.

Freeflow, Allison Cowe, and Whole Damn County will be featured.

Local band Big Up performed on March 14.

Who: Freeflow

When: March 15

Where: Pontiac GMC Snow Show Mainstage, Whistler Village

"Freeflow is looking to take it to the next level," says Jason Evans, lead singer-songwriter of the five-piece band.

"We?re sincere about what we do, and our music stays away from the mainstream, poppy sound," Evans adds.

And no better place to gain exposure for the two-year-old band than the Snow Show venue located in the village. The Snow Show is sort of a starter series of concerts which serves as a warm-up for the lengthy lineups at this year?s World Ski and Snowboard Festival in April.

Freeflow placed second in the Survival of the Bands at the Arts Club this past month. Their prize was 10 hours recording time at Sea Side Studios, where they hope to record anywhere from two to three songs.

"The lyrical content of our songs is mainly written by myself," says Evans.

Gone Numb was inspired after moving to the West Coast from Toronto.

"Gone Numb is really a cathartic tale about trying to figure out what?s going on in the world," says Evans.

Higher and Higher is a song more aggressively hip hop in nature, while Take Me For Granted has a bouncy feel, says guitarist Reece Worth.

Worth calls Bandwagon "a socially conscious tune about the state of things generally."

You can also expect covers like Sweet Caroline in the mix.

Wilson Padmos (keys), Simon Davies (bass)), and Ryan Davis (drums) round out the band lineup.

Who: Allison Crowe trio with opener Ryan McMahon

Where: Snow Show

When: March 16

Rising indie talent Allison Crowe, who has been attracting MTV Canada, and MuchMusic of late, performs from her EP Six Songs this weekend.

She also appears during the World Ski and Snowboard Festival at the Shack on March 17.

Who: Whole Damn County

Where: Snow Show

When: March 17

Pete Couillard and the whole bunch get rocking and rolling as Whole Damn County takes to the stage Sunday.

The four-piece high energy rock band play strong harmonies and will be featured at this year?s New Music West Festival on May 10.

Chad Oliver, Jason Bonnell, and Steve Ballstadt are part of the lineup. Together they won the Battle of the Bands in Vancouver this time last year.

The band is set to release a new album, Negatives, this year. Chad Kroeger of Nickelback provided assistance with the album, recorded at Greenhouse Studios in Burnaby.

The band also performs weekly on Friday and Saturdays at Moe Joe?s and Sundays at the Shack.
