WSSF promises usual eye candy, technical delights

Organizers of the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival have announced the lineup for the action sport photography event, the 5 th annual Pro Photographer Showcase, which takes place April 18.

Three international photographers – sports photographer Ace Kvale, snowboard photographer Kevin Zacher and action photographer Dave Heath – have each been invited to present a 12-minute slide show that features the best work of their careers.

Kvale, whose clients include National Geographic and Patagonia, has been in the business since 1982. His adventure photography features work from New Zealand, Russia, and Africa, including 13 expeditions to the Himalayas.

"I’m living the dream," he says.

Zacher, senior photographer with Transworld Snowboarding, has shot for both Adrenalin Magazines, and Airwalk.

"I shoot photos," he says, "because I cannot imagine myself doing anything else."

Last but not least, Heath has been shooting photos since his high school years. Now age 34, he says the golden photo rule is "Be there – don’t not be there."

The fourth "wildcard" seat at the Showdown is reserved for the winner of the Festival’s Pro Photographer Search, taking place on April 15 and April 16.

Blake Jorgenson, a Whistler-based photographer and winner of last year’s contest, will present a highlight show.

Jorgenson joins the panel of judges which include Jon Foster (Editor-In-Chief, Transworld Snowboarding), J. Grant Brittain (Photo Editor, Transworld Skateboarding), Flip McCririck (Photo Editor, Freeze Magazine), and local professional photographers Eric Berger and Paul Morrison.

The Pro Photographer Showdown is presented in conjunction with W1, Mountain Sports Media, Transworld Media, Fathom Expeditions and Arc’teryx. It’s one event in a series of sports, music and action events taking place from April 12 through 21 at the World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

The Showdown takes place on April 18, at the Whistler Conference Centre.

Tickets are $25, available from 9 a.m. on Friday, April 12.

For the record

In a story last week on the Pro Photographer Search there were a number of errors regarding the review committee. The review committee includes Kurtis Kroy, Leanna Rathkelly, Robin Dutcher, Greg Griffith, Jeanette Nadon and Bruce Rowles. Leslie Anthony, editorial director of Skier Magazine, is the MC for the event, not a member of the review committee. The best of show will be presented on April 16.
