Jason Evans of Freeflow recounts days in a Mexican tour that helped with the bands success.
"We were really the house band at this bohemian bar in San Miguel Allende, Mexico, playing five or six nights a week," says Evans.
For two months the band played together, and shared a living space.
"The experience really took us to the next level as a band, and on a personal level too."
But just how did the Vancouver band land a gig down south prior to the release of their latest, Bar Fly Sessions , last January?
"Thats where the title comes from, actually, and the bar owner was this crazy little Mexican man who recited poetry and was into all kinds of music including jazz," says Evans.
A bandmembers brother had moved to Mexico a few years previous, and was able to secure the gigs on their behalf.
"Its great playing down there, people get really involved with the music. And even if DJs are playing the crowd will sing along. Its a little less reserved than here," he says.
Freeflow describe their music as an eclectic mix of sounds, influenced by the urban environment they grew up in which included reggae, hip hop, and soul.
The World Ski and Snowboard Festival exposure offers potential.
"Certain large companies are looking for a specific sound, and a specific look. Its every bands dream to get the record deal, and as long as we can keep on playing the music we want to do, well considerate it," he says.
