Gymnastics club holds fund-raising bottle drive this weekend

Let the Whistler Gymnastics Club help out with the spring cleaning this year. On Sunday, April 14, the gymnasts are going door to door collecting bottles to raise money for a new table vault.

The new style of vaults debuted internationally at the last Olympics, and are just starting to appear in clubs around British Columbia.

Unlike the old vaults, the new vaults have a larger surface area and the front is angled down for safety. "The benefit is fewer injuries from crashing into it, and the kids feel more comfortable doing more difficult tricks," explains Whistler Gymnastics program director Tami Ross. "It’s scary to run at a vault."

The club also wants its gymnasts to be familiar with the table vaults so they are better able to compete against other clubs in the province that already have them. The price tag is $4,000.

Just leave your bottles by the curb, from Emerald Estates to Bayshores, and one of eight groups of gymnasts will be by to pick them up between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

To arrange for a special pickup or to make a donation, contact Tami Ross at 604-938-0033.
