Two Whistler residents were killed in a head-on car accident Wednesday afternoon in the Cheakamus Canyon.

A 49-year-old man and his 38-year-old wife died as a result of injuries sustained when their 1979 Cadillac Deville lost control, crossed the centre line, and collided with a pickup truck driven by a 38-year-old Pemberton man.

No names had been released at press time.

Two children riding in the south-bound Cadillac, a boy age 3 and a girl age 10, also sustained serious injuries and were taken to Children’s Hospital in Vancouver for treatment.

The driver of the north-bound pickup, a 1988 Ford F250, was transported to Vancouver General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

A 20-year-old female passenger in the pickup sustained minor injuries. She was treated and released from Squamish General Hospital.

RCMP say the two people in the pickup truck and the driver of the Cadillac were all wearing their seatbelts. The woman in the Cadillac, who was in the back seat, and the two children were not wearing seatbelts or child restraints.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:43 p.m. April 17, about 18 kilometres north of Squamish in a windy, two-lane stretch of highway with no shoulders.

A release from the RCMP states: "Reports from witnesses at the scene indicate the Cadillac was seen speeding and driving erratically just prior to the accident."

RCMP extend thanks and appreciation to motorists who provided immediate aid and assistance to the accident victims.
