May Fair returns Saturday

What: May Fair

When: Saturday, May 11 th , 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Where: Base of Blackcomb

Who: The Alta Lake School

The Alta Lake School is hosting its annual May Fair on Saturday, May 11 th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities include children's arts and crafts, storytelling, May pole dancing, a wishing pond, a BBQ and bake table and lots more surprises.

The Alta Lake School is a Waldorf-inspired, non-profit independent school. Waldorf schools world-wide have a tradition of celebrating the turn of the season with special festivals that focus on old fashioned fun and reverence for these special times of year.

The May Fair is being held at the Base of Blackcomb, in and around the Whistler Kids facility which is great, as there is ample space indoors if the weather turns unfavourable.

Crafts, that the children do themselves or with the help of a parent, include Butterfly and Pine Cone Bird Mobiles, Felted Balls, Bark Boats, and Broaches. The children can make their own fresh flower garlands for their hair or put together a special potted plant for Mom for Mother's Day. All the activities are low in cost and use natural materials whenever possible.

The highlight of the day will be the May Pole Dancing.

"I remember so well, when I was young, the May Fair in our community and the honour of holding one of the ribbons and skipping around the may pole. It's something you don't see very often anymore." recalls Peggy Vogler one of the many parent volunteers.

Another special activity will be the wishing pond. Children will enter a magical gnome cave that is decorated with moss, boughs, pine cones, special rocks and crystals. They are given a special golden stone that they can cast into the pond after they make a wish for someone in their family.

"We did something similar at our Christmas Fair, and it was amazing to see the awe and wonder in the children's faces and how they really took the time to listen to their inner selves as they made their special wish! Many children returned again and again just so they could have that feeling one more time!"
