Wine festival raises almost $10,000

The 12 th Annual Whistler International Wine Festival held May 9 was as popular an event as ever. More than 300 people attended and helped raise $9,850. As always the funds raised are used to increase the collection and assist with programs.

The library could not put on such an event without the generous sponsorship of International Cellars Inc., the French Trade Commission, the Consulate General of Spain, the United States Consulate General, the Consolato Generale d’Italia as well as the generosity of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, Nesters Market, the Grocery Store, and Whistler Printing.

The event relies on many volunteers to pour wine and inform the public on the merits of the wine they are tasting. Each volunteer is coached by the staff of International Cellars on the distinctive features of the wine and the country where it is made. I know I always learn something new about a wine I enjoy. The booklets containing the names of the wines offered at the festival are most helpful for those of us who cannot remember which wine we really liked when we go to purchase it.

This year’s festival was co-ordinated by trustee Dagmar Roth with the able assistance of former trustee Jennifer Villard. The library board would like to thank all the businesses who donated items to our famous and very popular book draw and to all the volunteers who so capably staffed this event. The draw sold out half way through the evening and many people could be seen with their baskets of soap, boxes of chocolates or gift certificates for restaurants.

The silent auction raised more than $1,000 with the sales of a hand-crafted quilt, magnums of wine, a fine art print and a night’s hotel accommodation.
