The Whistler Public Library will once again be running a Summer Reading Club for children ages 3-9. Summer reading clubs encourage children to read for fun and to maintain reading skills during the summer months. This year’s program is called "Booked for the Summer" and encourages children to take books with them wherever they go and allows the books to "take them places." It will help them to develop a regular reading habit, refine their reading skills, and most of all, make reading fun! There will be something for everyone.

Special programs for children will be held on Wednesdays in July and August. Sessions for 5-9 year olds will be held 4-5 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. There will also be a session for preschoolers aged 3-4 from 11 a.m. — noon. Activities will include stories, crafts and games. Pre-registration is important.

A special visit from B.C. children’s author Linda Bailey will kick-off the Summer Reading Club. She has written several popular and award-winning books including the Stevie Diamond Mystery series and the Good Times Travel Agency series. She will be reading from her books on July 3, 2002 at the Whistler Public Library at 7 p.m. The author reading is most appropriate for children ages 5 and up.

Club members will receive a reading record, bookmark, stickers and a medal to encourage them to spend their summer holiday with books. This year’s poster and bookmarks feature the art of Rose Cowles, whose work may be familiar to many school children in B.C. Rose illustrated Gilbert de la Frogponde , Dog Tales , and the " Mysterious You " series.

The Summer Reading Club is sponsored by the Whistler Public Library in co-operation with the British Columbia Library Association and the B.C. Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women’s Services.
