Co-ed team on fund-raising drive to represent Whistler against top teams in Canada
The Powder Mountain Snowcats (PMS) Whistler Slo-Pitch is on its way to The Show – the Molson Slo-Pitch National Championships in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan from Aug. 1 to 5.
They qualified with strong results in regional and provincial tournaments last year, where they were consistently among the finalists.
Now they’re on deck to play some of the top co-ed teams in Canada. They just don’t want to be in the hole to do it.
"We were third in the province last year, and now we’re on our way to Prince Albert," says Berto Corso, player and manager for the travelling team. The team is comprised of six women and eight men, the best of the best in the Whistler Slo-Pitch league.
"We have to get some fund-raising going, and we’re basically looking for ideas. It’s going to be an expensive trip," he said. "All the kids on the team work hard, they’re blue collar, and they really can’t afford the trip on their own."
The team is already holding 50-50 draws and raffles at Slo-Pitch games, and selling shirt space to local sponsors. Food Plus, Sea to Sky Security and the WildWood Café are already taking up shirt space.
The team needs money to cover transportation and accommodation during the five-day tournament, where they will compete against teams from all over Canada in the ‘C’ division. Five men and five women will be on the field at all times.
The team is comprised of Lori Glazier, Sonya Sneyd, Justine Ewart, Candace Graham, Erica Janakova, Camille Gemmal, Jesse Demers, Jeff McLean, Jeff Shantz, Reggie Sutton, Cory Van Warmer, Ryan Jazic, Keenan Hood, Tim Houlihan and Corso.

Whistler will be hosting the nationals in 2003, and the team is using this year’s tournament as training for what they hope will be a strong showing at home next summer.
