Whistler received over half a million dollars in school taxes and grants in-lieu from BC Hydro for 2002.

The money is in lieu of general property taxes.

Of that amount, school taxes accounted for $326,944.05 and grants-in-lieu and other taxes were $215,704.02.

While the municipality collects school taxes, those funds are turned over to the school district.

"BC Hydro is proud to be able to encourage growth and development of each community through these contributions," said BC Hydro President and COO, Michael Costello.

"We feel that these payments show our commitment to our customers and provide local municipalities and rural areas with support for school districts, infrastructure and operations."

An additional $316,488 grant was paid to the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District for dams, reservoirs and generating stations.

This amount was unchanged from last year.

Province-wide, BC Hydro paid approximately $141.3 million in taxes and grants-in-lieu of general taxes for 2002, an increase of approximately $1.3 million over the total amount paid in the 2001 calendar year.

The majority of the increase was paid in grants to municipalities.

Of the $141.3 million paid this year, approximately $98.7 million went to school taxes and $42.6 million to grants and other taxes for local governments (municipalities), regional districts and the province (rural areas).
