Creekside Festival Sept. 7
Merchants and residents south of the village feel the time has come to celebrate Whistler’s other hub – Creekside, the place where it all began.
After a dusty summer of road works, the Whistler Creek Merchants Association says it’s time to put away the diggers and get down to some fun.
The first annual Creekside Street Festival will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7 between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the new Lake Placid Road and at Alpha Lake Park.
There will be a beer garden, Dusty’s famous BBQ, children’s activities and performers and community projects and development booths along the way.
One hundred per cent of the net proceeds will be donated to the Whistler Library/Museum Capital Campaign, aimed at building the educational heart of Whistler.
Organizers want talented locals to get involved.
The call has gone out for buskers to share their talents and put themselves to the test in the festival’s busking contest. Call Cheryl Bullock of the Creekside Street Festival Committee at 604-905-4405 for more information.
Whistler Cable goes interactive
A new Whistler Cable interactive Web site is taking things to the next level in customer service. Now customers can pay their bill online, check their account history, order new services, like digital channels and Pay Per View movies, as well as check their Whooshnet e-mail account from any Internet connection around the world.
"Whistler Cable has invested over $100,000 into software this year alone," said Ron Saperstein, general manager of Whistler Cable.
"This commitment to technology enables us to deliver unprecedented service options and assures our customers that they’re subscribing to the best product out there."
The Web site is an effort to meet the demands of increasingly Web-savvy clients who want to do business "on their own time."
Some of the perks of the new site include:
• Channel packages that can be upgraded instantly allowing customers to order a channel for a few days and then cancel it. Customers will only be charged for the days on their account.
• The new monthly billing system gives the option to receive bills through e-mail, which reduces paper waste.
• And a Customer Support section provides customer support and help.

Quilters pitch in
The Whistler Valley Quilters Guild is the first local community group to donate money to the Library/Museum & Archives Capital Fund.
The quilters handed over $1,000 out of funds raised through a raffle draw for a handmade quilt at their recent Quilt Show. The quilt, called "Cabin in the Woods," took more than 250 hours of sewing to complete and was won by Cathy Griffen of Burnaby.
"We are pleased to make this contribution to the capital campaign as we all understand the need to have a new building for the library and museum," said Sue Stafford, president of the Quilters Guild.
"We know that in a capital campaign every contribution is important."
The capital campaign kicked off in March with a goal of raising $10 million for the new building.
The current total sits at $5.6 million.
In addition to the $1,000 contribution, the guild also donated $500 to the Pemberton Public Library.
Community challenged
The municipality is tempting all community members to accept the first annual Community Commuter Challenge with a Whistler-Blackcomb Season’s Pass for 2002-2003 season.
The challenge will take place from Sept. 19 to Oct. 2, during which time all Whistlerites will be asked to walk, cycle, bus or carpool to work.
All Whistler organizations, large and small, are encouraged to take part in the challenge. There will be prizes for the winning organization as well as for individual participants.
The Commuter Challenge is designed to get more people out of their cars to help Whistler move towards a more sustainable future.
Each organization has been asked to designate a co-ordinator to contact Rina Bowen at the municipality at 604-935-8203. There will be a co-ordinators meeting on Thursday, Aug. 22 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at council chambers in municipal hall.
