Riding for style

Today’s breed of bikes are designed to be light, durable, and functional in all kinds of terrain and situations. If only they were a little more stylish.

On Aug. 20, owners and lovers of cruiser bikes – chopped, vintage, low-rider or otherwise retro-looking bikes that may or may not have fenders, banana seats, curved handlebars and frames, different sized wheels, wicker baskets, springs, and chrome detailing – are invited to come out and celebrate the second annual Cruiser Bike Night.

To participate, bring your cruiser to the base of Whistler Mountain before 7 p.m. At seven, cyclists will ride around the village showing off their bikes to the admiring and jealous crowds. The ride will finish up at the ride’s sponsor, the Amsterdam Pub, where the riders can keep a suspicious eye on the bike racks.

"Last year we had a dozen people out there on cruiser bikes, and it attracted some attention. This year it should be bigger. No ten speeds, though – we want cruisers, low-riders, banana seats. Anything with a basket and a kickstand should fit right in," says organizer Paul Fournier.

"It’s just a fun thing for people to show off their cool bikes."

The cost is $5 to enter a bike, and all of the money raised will go towards WORCA’s trail building and maintenance fund.

For more information on the ride, contact Fournier at 604-932-6300.
