This year a total of four Whistler locals will represent Team Canada at the 2002 UCI World Mountain Bike Championships at Kaprun, Austria at the end of August.

Will Routley will race in the cross-country Under 23 Espoir category, Brook Baker will race in the Junior Expert downhill, and Sylvie Allen and Claire Buchar will race in the Pro Elite downhill.

All four locals plus Vancouver’s Cassandra Boone are hosting a fundraising party at Garfinkel’s on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Last year’s fundraiser to send five locals to the world championships was a success, with more than 50 local businesses donating over 100 prizes to a draw and a silent auction. There was a strong local turnout, and the racers are hoping for the same level support this year.

While Canada will be picking up part of the tab, few of the athletes have a completely free ride to Austria, and many have to come up with a share of airfare, accommodation and living expenses.
