Pemberton Mayor Elinor Wariner calls her election by acclamation "a great honour."

"I was expecting to be challenged," she said."(But) I think this council has done a good job."

With a policy for open government, Warner says she returns all her phone calls and if she doesn’t know the answer to a problem, she finds the answer.

"I think people appreciate that," she said.

Among the issues facing Pemberton in the coming years, Wariner said a sewer treatment plant is top of the list.

Also on the list for community amenities in the coming years is a recreation complex.

Without the treatment plant, there can be no recreation complex in Pemberton she said.

She is also looking for public input when the town revisits the Official Community Plan next year to ensure that the plan is still valid for the demographics of today.

"I think it’s an exciting time in Pemberton and I think it’s a critical time in our growth," she said.

Warner found out on Friday afternoon that she would be serving as mayor for another three years.

She is very excited about the prospect.

"I really felt that I wanted to do two terms as mayor," she said. "There are some things that I wanted to complete."

Still, she does not think she would run for a third term.

There are eight candidates vying for the four seats on council.

"It’s exciting. It means there are eight people out there who want to get involved," said Wariner.

Among the candidates are two incumbents, Doug Blakey and Mark Blundell.

Current councillor Bruce Van Mook has decided not to run and Sue Weinberg resigned in the summer because she moved away from Pemberton.

There was no by-election because it was so close to election time.

The six new candidates running for election are: Michelle Beauregarde, Lynda Chandler, Richard Doucet, Mark Hunter, Robert Meilleur and Karen Petty.

Warner said the sheer amount of candidates is giving the community a lot of choice. They are all coming from different walks of life.

"I’m really pleased," she said.

There are also three candidates running for one position as School Board Trustee.

Incumbent Betty Lou Connell is running again in addition to Mike Milner and Douglas Steane.

Voting day in Pemberton is on Nov. 16 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Signal Hill Elementary School.

There will be advanced voting at the Pemberton Municipal Office on Wednesday Nov. 6 and Wednesday Nov. 13 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.
