Guess who’s coming to dinner next month? Perhaps the whole country. It’s the second annual Night of A Thousand Dinners and we’re all invited.

Tens of thousands of guests are already registered in more than 30 countries to participate in one all-mighty feast, to be held in homes all over the planet, on Thursday night, Dec. 5.

The concept is exciting and all too easy: Essentially guests gets to wine, dine and be merry, so long as everyone at the table throws in a few bucks, or more, to help eradicate landmines around the world.

The nation-wide nosh-up is overseen by the United Nations Association, however each country has their own hosts too. In our neck of the woods, it’s the Canadian Landmine Foundation, in support of the Adopt-A-Minefield program. Vice President of the Foundation, Scott Fairweather said: "These funds allow thousands to return to their homes, cultivate their land and reclaim their lives."

The event got off to a roaring start last year, raising $1.4 million. Besides the more intimate family and friends type of gatherings garnering donations, many big-name supporters held their own big-time banquets. High profile hosts included Deputy Prime Minister John Manley. U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell held one, as did Sir Paul McCartney and his wife Heather Mills.

Hosts, however big or small, are encouraged to be creative with their charity culinary collective. Fairweather said a lot of people were "holding a cultural theme to their dinners, experimenting with recipes from countries most affected by landmines – we’re calling it multicultural pot luck!"

Anybody interested in hosting their own dinner can register online at www.1000dinners.com . Glance through the host information kit, which happens to have some great recipes to help you out.
