Two Whistler women’s volleyball teams, the Whistler Extreme and Whistler Whoosh, travelled to Vancouver last weekend to compete in the annual Tier Drop tournament.

Both teams faced some tough competition from the Lower Mainland and Victoria, and both battled their way to fifth place rankings in their respective tiers.

For the Whistler Whoosh, who played in the Tier II and III division on Saturday, it was the first time the team has played together in a tournament.

Sue Oliver and Myrna Budge were quick in the setting position, Farren Assaly and Jan Budge made some great saves and kills from the middle blocking positions, and Megan Ballard and Amy Moore scored up front.

On Sunday, the Whistler Extreme faced some of the top teams in the province in the Tier I and II division. They finished second in their pool to start the day before moving into the winner’s bracket.

They took a team called the Cobras from Burnaby to a third game in the quarter-finals, but lost 15-11.

Veronika Voracek and Catherine Frew were strong in blocking and hitting from the middle, while Olga Archiardi and Laura Wetaski played well up front and Georgina Titus and Carolanne Martin contributed some amazing defence. Jennifer Johnson was solid on the service and in setting, and Carlee Howell contributed some solid sets and offence.

This weekend, Whistler Women’s Volleyball is hosting its first ever B.C. Volleyball Association tournament from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The teams are inviting all spectators to come out and show their support.
