Whistler Mountain Ski Club FIS level racers are taking advantage of the below freezing temperatures and snowmaking at resorts in the Alberta Rockies to get in some additional on-snow training before the start of the Nor Am season.

On Nov. 16, the FIS team headed to Mt. Norquay in Banff to train on a closed run for four days before heading to Nakiska, the site of the 1988 Olympic alpine skiing events. The focus of the camp is the upcoming Nor Am speed series at Lake Louise, Alberta, from Dec. 9 to 16.

"We are balancing a variety of needs at this camp," said Jordan Williams, the head FIS coach for the WMSC. "Some of the more mature athletes are preparing to race in a couple of weeks at various Nor Am events which will feature some of the strongest fields of the year, as national teams use the events as season warm-ups. Our younger racers are looking to build off their summer development and will slowly progress towards training in simulated race conditions."

In addition, 11 K2 racers (aged 13 and 14) will travel to Apex in Penticton on Nov. 30 to participate in B.C. Alpine’s "Best-to-Best" camps, where they will train with other K2 skiers from B.C. and Alberta with coaching from members of national and development teams.
