Salmon feeding forests?

Dr.

Dr. Tom Reimchen in Whistler as part of Naturalist speaker series

While scientists used to believe that nutrients tended to flow from the land to the sea, a University of Victoria researcher is studying the possibility that things might work a little differently in our coastal rainforests.

Salmon may actually be the fertilizer and food staple that feed the ecology, from the bears that drag their catch into the woods, to the birds and insects that scavenge the salmon carcasses, to the trees, plants and shrubs that are enriched by whatever nutrients are left.

Dr. Tom Reimchen will be in Whistler discuss his research as part of the Whistler Naturalist Society speaker series on Thursday, Jan. 23 rd at Millennium Place. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. and admission in $5 for society members, and $7 for the public.
