Where: adele-campbell Fine Art Gallery
Launch: Sunday, Jan. 26, 1-5 p.m.
Popular artist Rod Charlesworth is well known for using vibrant colours and taking a mystical approach to the Canadian landscape, and now hes painting kids. More to the point, scenes of kids playing in the snow.
Postcards From the Snow Zone is an exhibition focusing on a relatively new subject for the father of three.
"Living in Kelowna, Ive been watching my boys grow and have fun with winter for years, its a very Canadian thing to do," said Charlesworth. "The colour, the movement, the playfulness of the paintings evokes a lot of what winter means for me and my family its a good time."
This latest whimsical, almost child-like series is quite a contrast to this successful artists previous work. His paintings appear in dozens of corporate offices around the country, he is featured in many industry magazines and his earliest influences were the surrealists like Salvador Dali. He then discovered the works of the impressionist school and the Group of Seven.
"They turned away from the traditional European way of painting landscapes. Their work was strong and bold which I liked a lot," said Charlesworth.
He hopes to attract even the most amateur art admirer to his collection.
"I think some people take art way too seriously. I want to have fun with it, put humour into it and make it casual. If you enjoy my work, thats good enough for me, you dont need to understand it, it doesnt matter."
Meet Rod Charlesworth and his Snow Zone collection at adele-campbell on Sunday. The exhibit will continue to Feb. 10.
