Whistler welcomes diverse groups over next few weeks
Whistler is right in the throes of its busy season. Starting this weekend there will be three large back-to-back groups in the resort, which are expected to account for almost 28,000 room nights in various Whistler accommodation properties over the next three weeks.
First up is The Ohio Valley Ski Council, with roughly 275 visitors in Whistler from Jan. 25 to Feb. 1. The OVSC represents 15 ski clubs throughout the Ohio Valley, including Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.
Right on the heels of the OVSC is the National Brotherhood of Skiers. The NBS has been here in the past but this year they’re having their bi-annual fundraising summit that will attract more NBS members than have ever come to Whistler before. Up to 4,000 members could be gracing the slopes and having fun in the village from Feb. 1 to 8.
And to cap off the visits there’s Altitude Eleven, the annual gay and lesbian ski week in Whistler from Feb. 8 to 16. The most infamous event of the Altitude week, the Snow Ball, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Brownlie awarded medal for outstanding contribution
Dave Brownlie, senior vice president of finance for Whistler-Blackcomb, is one of 211 outstanding British Columbians presented with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal last week.
Lt.-Gov. Iona Campagnolo and Premier Gordon Campbell presented the medals to the recipients during a ceremony at Government House Jan. 15.
The medals were given out to people who have made outstanding contributions to their communities, province or country, either through their careers or volunteer work.
Brownlie was recognized for his service to the community and as a prominent business leader.
At least three others with Whistler connections were also awarded the Jubilee medals. They are: former Olympic swimming medallist Marion Lay, who has a place in Whistler and is also president of the 2010 LegaciesNow program, Umberto Menghi, who owns two Whistler restaurants, and Thomas Ladner, who is one of the original shareholders in the Garibaldi Lifts Ltd. company.
Olympic athletes share memories at Heritage Night
Find out first-hand what the Olympics are all about at the Whistler Museum and Archives Society’s Heritage Night.
On Saturday, Feb. 22 athletes will be sharing the memories of what it was like to compete in an Olympic Games. They will be taking part in a trivia contest and wearing their past Olympic outfits. The audience is also welcome to wear any Olympic clothing they have.
There will also be a new exhibit at MY Place featuring Hats and Helmets from past Olympic Winter Games. The Whistler Museum and Archives is putting out a call for any hats, helmets and outerwear in the community that should be part of this display.
The new exhibit is part of the Celebration 2010 festivities taking place around town from Feb. 14 to March 6.
Calling all Sea to Sky photographers
An exhibit at MY Place featuring local photographers will be held from March 1 to 31 in the gallery. Any member of the Whistler Photographic Society can submit work and a jury of creative professionals will choose the final exhibit photos from those submitted images. The deadline for entry is Feb. 5.
The month-long exhibit will showcase local talent and feature a wide-range of imagery, from action sports and mountain culture to architecture and nature. This year the exhibit is also part of Celebration 2010, a three-week province-wide appreciation of the arts.
Photographers can submit up to four low-resolution scans, 4x6 prints, or 35 duplicated slides for consideration to the Whistler Photographic Society, care of Leanna Rathkelly, 6283 Piccolo Drive, Whistler, B.C., V0N 1B6.
Hydro gives to Pemberton conservation area
B.C. Hydro has presented Pemberton with a cheque for $10,000 that will go towards a conservation project at One Mile Lake. The project will protect the wetlands habitat in that conservation area.
The local Lions Club will co-ordinate the restoration of a boardwalk and local contractors, village council and community members will carry out the restoration work. There will descriptive plaques along the boardwalk.
One Mile Lake is located near Pemberton, adjacent to Highway 99 and is bordered by a swimming and picnic area.
