Freestylers setting sights on provincials

The team’s first contest was at Apex from Jan. 10 to 12.

In the Youth Ladies’ Moguls contest, the top spot went to BFSC skier Keltie Hicks with a score of 19.04, almost two full points ahead of her closest competition. She posted the top scores in all three judging categories, including turns, air and time.

In the Junior Ladies’ Moguls, the BFSC’s Christina Ortero finished just 1.7 points back of the gold medal to take the silver medal. She placed second in turns and time, but easily won the air category.

In the Youth Men’s Moguls, Zack Glanzberg of the BFSC finished a close second, 0.31 points out of first out of a field of 22 athletes. He earned top marks for his turns and air, but lost points for his speed.

In the Juvenile Men’s Moguls, Eddie Hicks was the top BFSC skier in fifth place, but just 2.45 seconds out of the lead.

In the Junior Men’s division, the BFSC’s Andrew Clough finished fifth, while Cameron Doyle and Kiyoshi Terada were 15 th and 16 th respectively.

Nishio Hiroyuki of the BFSC was second in the Senior Men’s Moguls by a wide margin.

In the dual moguls, Whistler’s Keltie Hicks took the Youth category once again. Christina Ortero was the top Junior in third.

For the men, Eddie Hicks led the way for the BFSC with a gold medal in the Juvenile category. Andrew Clough was the top BFSC junior in fifth place.

In the Big Air contest, Keltie Hicks took the bronze medal and Emily Higgins was eighth in the Youth contest. Christina Ortero was second in the junior contest.

Zack Glanzberg was ninth in the men’s Youth category, Eddie Hicks was seventh as a Juvenile, and Cameron Doyle and Terada Kiyoshi were second and fifth respectively among the Juniors. Nishio Hiroyuki was the only male in the Senior event.

All told the BFSC came home with 11 out of 57 medals with a team of nine athletes in a total field of more than 90.

The BFSC coaches are Yosuke Hamazaki, Brett Wood, Mark Abma, Graham Smith, Myles Ricketts and Marc McDonell.

The B.C. Freestyle Ski Association provincial series continues in Revelstoke with events from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2.
