Village Square is heading for a face-lift to make it more pedestrian friendly.
According to the new plans, which will be on display this Sunday, Feb. 9, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the square, there will be more public seating, better stair access on all sides, and a new information kiosk, which will incorporate public art.
Municipal planners are looking for public input on their ideas so get out and look at the plans.
The project was a priority of the Village Enhancement Strategy, a two-year public process to engage business owners, retailers and the public in identifying issues in the area.
Many stakeholders were involved in the process, from designers, to municipal staff to business owners and operators and event organizers.
Even Tourism Whistler’s core commercial committee and advisory design panel got in on the act.
The mandate was to work with the existing elements to enhance the look and functionality of the square, both day-to-day and during special events. The proposed components include multi-level terracing and broad angle stairs along the edges of the square by Hearthstone Lodge, the Blackcomb professional building and the breezeway, to reinforce the square’s geometry, improve pedestrian circulation and better define the entrances to the buildings and the breezeway.
Construction is scheduled to begin April 22 and will last until June 30 if the municipal council approves the plan.
