Vancouver Mountain film fest this weekend

This year is the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Mt.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Mt. Everest and the sixth year of the Vancouver International Mountain Film festival – two historic events of different magnitudes that have both intrigued and inspired mountain enthusiasts around the world.

The festival runs from Feb. 14 to Feb. 23 in venues around the city. VIFF is not just an exhibit of adventure films and documentaries, it is also a forum creating the exchange of ideas between filmmakers, outdoor activists, and the public.

The main event is the competitive film competition. Filmmakers from around the world submit their work to be judged by an international jury. An exceptional selection of speakers will also make appearances. Barry Blanchard will talk about alpine climbing in the Canadian Rockies, Timmy O'Neill will recount his fastest ascents in Yoesmite and Patagonia, and local heroes Jim Milina, Jeremy Frimer, Guy Edwards and Peter Habeler will speak about their lifetime high-altitude climbing careers. The list is too great to print so visit the website www.vimff.org for all the details.
