What: Scratch DVD Release Party

Where: Savage Beagle

When: Thursday, April 3 at 8 p.m.

If you ever wanted to enter the heady world of hip hop as a career move, this movie is for you. Or even if you just want to know how it all started, this movie is for you.

Scratch

is a feature length documentary that explores the scene and its progression, mainly on the streets of San Francisco and New York. The story runs the gamut from the birth of hip hop to its present day popularity. You’ll learn how pioneering DJs began extending breaks on their party records, which helped inspire break dancing and rap, right through to the invention of scratching and "beat-juggling" vinyl. The film tracks the recent explosion of the musical movement called "turntablism" and tells the story of unknown underdogs and serious virtuosos who are radically changing the way we hear music.

Filled with interviews, live concert footage and beat-battles from national turntable competitions, Scratch provides a steady stream of insight from some of the biggest names in DJ-ing. Check out dynamic performances and interviews with DJs Q-bert, Mix Master Mike of the Beastie Boys, Rob Swift and the X-ecutioners, Cut Chemist & NuMark of Jurassic 5, DJ Craze, The Bullet Proof Space Travelers, Babu of Dilated Peoples, DJ Krush, DJ Premier (Gang Starr) and many others. Old-school innovators like Afrika Bambaataa and GrandWizard Theodore are also in the mix, widely acknowledged as having invented the idea of scratching vinyl in the first place.

Doors open at 8 p.m., show starts at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free. The film will be followed by The Return of the Digital Underdogg featuring DJ Tanner.
