Gymnasts earn medals at Flicka Invitational

Last Saturday, the Whistler Gymnastics Club took part in the annual Flicka Invitational in North Vancouver. They were competing against some of the largest teams in the province, include Flicka, Coquitlam, Langley, Vancouver and Delta.

Last Saturday, the Whistler Gymnastics Club took part in the annual Flicka Invitational in North Vancouver. They were competing against some of the largest teams in the province, include Flicka, Coquitlam, Langley, Vancouver and Delta.

The KIP athletes did well, winning a combination of gold, silver and bronze ribbons for their efforts.

The competitive gymnasts also posted some strong results. It was their first full competition of the season, which meant they had to compete in all four disciplines – bars, floor, vault and beam.

In the Level 1 Novice category, Whistler’s Tegan Turcotte won gold on the bars and placed fourth on the beam to finish eighth all around out of 16 competitors. Michaela D’Artois finished third on the floor to finish 12 th all around.

In the Level 1 Tyro category for girls 10 years of age, Riley McSkimming took the silver on the vault and beam and was seventh on the floor to finish sixth all around. Makkinna Coombs was fifth on the floor and seventh on the vault, and Annik Tetrault was fifth on the bars and sixth on the beam to finish eighth and ninth overall.

In the Level 1 Tyro category for 11-year-olds, Whistler’s Jenny Higgins finished fourth all around after placing first on the vault, fourth on the bars and floor, and eighth on the beam. Angelina Manuel was eighth all around, winning the silver on the beam and finishing sixth on the floor.

In the Argo category for 9-year-olds, Ashlen Coombs won gold on the bars and was fourth on the beam to finished seventh all around. Sonya D’Artois was eighth on the bars and floor to finish 11 th .

In the Zone Level Tyro competition, Nicola Halliwell was fourth on the bars and sixth on the beam to finish 10 th . Hilary Carrel was 212 th with a bronze on the bars, and Natasha Dudley was 18 th .

Other members of the Whistler Gymnastics Club took part in Gymnaestrada over the weekend while the Interclub athletes were in Richmond for the Carwheel Incorporated Jungle Jamboree.

The Interclub athletes participating were Lucy Brown, Bianca Duval, Taylor laidlaw, Elianne Tailefer, Drew Weddell, Jenya Dudley, Meghan Duggan, Jocelyn Kay, Lizzy MacIssac, Lonnie Wake, Taylor Kelly, Michelle Pollington, Chantell Millan, and Martina Carter.

The Gymnaestrada group included Meaghan Burko, Sabrina Hosner, Sydney Jackson, Michaela Shrimpton, Julia Vodarek, Averi Willis, Elianne Taillefer and Lisa Nakajima. Abby Winter was away due to other obligations.

The gymnastics club has several other meets to attend around the province in the next six weeks, before the season wraps up with the year-end show on June 1.
