Rehearsals are well under way for 35 Whistler Secondary School students, feverishly dancing and singing their way through the script of Bye Bye Birdie. It’s the satiric Broadway musical smash about an Elvis Presley inspired rock star, who creates a near-riot in a small Midwestern town when he stops there for one last publicity junket before being drafted into the army. Bye Bye Birdie takes good-natured swipes at popular culture, rock ’n’ roll, and family life. Relive memories of your own high school productions as these dedicated students surprise even their parents with their talents in this good-natured show. For a school that’s never had a drama club, it’s pretty impressive and worth supporting.

Here’s one to take the kids to. With a cast of rollerbladers and themes of courage, determination and teamwork, My Game is the story of Georgie, who has been playing hockey ever since she could walk. She is captain of her hockey team and dreams of one day playing in the Olympic Games. But when Georgie's family moves to a small town, things change. There's no girls' league, and the coach and his son Mike won't let a girl play on their team.
Determined to play the game she loves, Georgie starts her own team and together the girls set out to change the community's perceptions of hockey. Inspired by the stories of feisty female hockey players from the past, Georgie and her team stand up to Mike's bullying and challenge the boys to a game, fair and square.
The play is meant for young people (K to Grades 7) and their families. Tickets are $12 and $7.
Garf’s takes a local’s night off
All you Thursday night partiers will have to party somewhere else this Thursday night, May 1. Garfinkel’s has to serve a closure for a rap over the knuckles received by the liquor license folks several months ago. You see it has to be a busy night they close in order to learn their lesson, hence the Thursday date. Garf’s management want to apologize and promise it’ll be double the fun next week to make it up to you.
