Secondary girls in soccer provincials

They didn’t win any games at the B.C. School Sports Senior A Provincial soccer tournament last weekend, but then again the Whistler Secondary Storm girls soccer team had never been there before.

Just qualifying for the provincial championships, where they faced elite teams from around the province, was a coup for the team. In the Zone 5 finals, the girls won games against Pender Harbour and Mt. Currie to qualify for the provincials. It was the first time Whistler entered a team for the Zone championships.

On their first day at UBC, the Whistler girls met the 2002 championship team, and although they played a tough game they couldn’t come up with the win. The next game was against another high calibre team, and once again the girls came up short.

The injuries started to pile up, and by their fourth and final game, they had just 11 players to take to the field.

While the team was not able to win, the players tried their best and a few stood out to the tournament directors. Alison Leighton was named to the first all-star team and Mia Daniels was named to the second team.

The members of the team are Stephanie Janyk, Lindsay McIvor, Katie Morgan, Lauren Collins, Emily McCalister, Marli Anderson, Megan Lande, Lilly Baker, Alix Browne-Munz, Kendall Benbow, Alison Leighton, Danielle Robson, Mia Daniels, Jillian McArthur, Claire Daniels, Caitlin Rempel and Julia Murray.

The coaches for the team were Andree Janyk and Bernard Messegeur.
