Set the stage — read!
Kids can step into the reading spotlight by joining the Whistler Public Library for the 2003 Summer Reading Club, starting now! It’s a lot of fun and it is absolutely free.
Special programs for children will be held on Wednesdays in July and August. Sessions for 5-9 year olds will be held 4 - 5 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. There will also be a session for pre-schoolers aged 3-4 from 11 a.m.—noon. Activities will include stories, crafts and games. Pre-registration is important.
Club members receive a reading log and bookmark to set the stage for reading. The reading log is a fun and exciting way to keep track of the books your child reads. Stickers are given out anytime a section of the log is filled out, marking the number of books your child reads throughout the summer.
This year, the Summer Reading Club will be kicked off with a special visit from Gerald Holt, an established author of children’s books in B.C. He is the author of Tails of Flame, an adventure set in wartime London, nominated for the Red Cedar Award; The Ghostly Tales of Mr. Tooth, a spooky Halloween story; and Ben and Jacky and the Missing Diamond . He will be reading from his books on July 9, 2003 at the Whistler Public Library at 7 p.m. The author presentation is most appropriate for children ages 5 and up.
This fun and educational Summer Reading Club encourages children to keep reading over the summer by making it fun, so that they maintain and build on the skills they acquire during the school year.
"Studies show that voluntary reading is the number one factor in establishing good reading habits in children. This is best accomplished when children get to choose their own books in a reading environment, like the public library, where there are a wide variety of books available to them," said Agnes Gorgon, Librarian.
The Summer Reading Club reaches over 65,000 children in British Columbia every summer and is sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association and Whistler Public Library with the assistance of the Public Library Services Branch, Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women's Services, George Abbott, Minister. Congratulations!
Jack Lamming, age 7, is a very motivated young man. In September he decided that he wanted to read 700 books and has been reading voraciously ever since. He borrows as many books as he can from both the school and public libraries. Since June 6 th , his goal has been to read 20 books a day! He has almost reached his goal, with the help of sister Megan, age 11, and his parents, Paula and Mark. Congratulations Jack – your determination is admirable.

Booking Computers
As of June 23 we will no longer be taking phone reservations for computer use. People wanting to use the computers for e-mail, word processing, research etc., must come to the library in person to register. Computers can be booked for 30 minutes at a time for e-mail or research and up to 60 minutes for word processing.
