Pemberton property snapped up

It may have been the enticement to ride Pemberton’s first elevator or perhaps the proximity to the Pony Espresso that brought all the buyers out to Portage Station.

It may have been the enticement to ride Pemberton’s first elevator or perhaps the proximity to the Pony Espresso that brought all the buyers out to Portage Station.

Whatever the reason, Pemberton’s latest townhouse development started selling even before the grand opening last Sunday. By the end of the weekend Portage Station had sold out.

There were 11 homes for sale, ranging from 1,100 to 1,800 square feet.

The two-bedroom units sold for $235,000 on average and the three-bedroom units ranged from $300,000-$320,000.

"There are a lot of buyers looking around for this kind of product and that kind of price range," said Reggie Tanzola, sales and marketing manager for Windridge Properties, which is also developing larger duplexes at the Pemberton Plateau.

Some Portage Station buyers were investors speculating on the Pemberton market, others were Whistler residents choosing to move up the valley.

Tanzola said there was competition for the homes, which drove the prices up.

Portage Station is a mixed commercial and residential building tucked between the Pony Espresso and the Petro-Canada.

It’s a three-storey building with an underground parking lot and Pemberton’s first elevator will take residents to their front door on the second floor. They’ll have to use the stairs to get to second floor of their townhouse.

Construction will begin this month and the project will be finished by June 2004.

Tanzola said Windridge is interested in building more product in this size and price range in the Pemberton area.
